Whisker of Evil by Rita Mae Brown & Sneaky Pie Brown

Review by Ruth Calland

She"s done it again!  Rita Mae Brown has once again woven a story of murder, intrigue, deceit, underhanded horse deals, past history and mayhem that will keep you glued to the edge of your seat.

Once again the town of Crozet, Virginia is visited by murder and mayhem.  Whisker of Evil begins with Mary ãHarryä Harristeen discovering the dead body of her neighbor, Barry Monteith.  It appears to Harry and her animal friends, Mrs. Murphy, Pewter, and Tucker, that a wild animal has killed Barry because his throat has been torn away.  With the discovery of Barry"s body, the threat of a possible rabies outbreak almost overshadows the evidence of murder.  This is only the beginning of a series of events that at first appear completely unrelated.

While waiting for the police to respond to the scene, Harry discovers in the stream next to the body, a woman"s class ring.  It turns out that the ring once belonged to a wealthy socialite, actress and horse breeder named Mary Pat Reines, who disappeared forty years earlier without a trace, along with her prize horse.

What do these two events have in common, even though they take place forty years apart?  Read Rita Mae Brown"s Whisker of Evil and find out what the connection is.  It may surprise you.

Ruth Calland moved with her family to Mason City in May from Oklahoma.  They are all avid readers and faithful library patrons.  She is an animal lover and has read all of the titles in Rita Mae Brown"s Mrs. Murphy series.  We thank her for her review.
