It’s Not About Me: Rescue from the Life We Thought Would Make Us Happy

by Max Lucado

Review by Ilene Gunn

This new book, It’s Not about Me, by Max Lucado remains on the Christian Bestseller List in 2005. I found it to be interesting and an easy read. It challenges us to set aside thinking that we are the center of our universe.

In Part 1, the author encourages us to ponder God; that everything and everyone exists to glorify God. He challenges us to see God through his Glory and great love, and to comprehend that God is teaching us that he is unchangeable and unfailing, preparing us for eternity with him. The author sprinkles his book with brief story illustrations.

In Part 2, he invites us to promote God in our lives. He briefly addresses sickness and troubles that beset us, and how, like mirrors, we can reflect God’s glory through our suffering or affliction. We learn why it isn’t about what we do, but what God does. We are challenged to shift our way of thinking, change from a life that doesn’t work through self-centered living to a life of purpose by making God the center of our lives. The book concludes with notes and interesting study questions for each chapter.

Ilene is a Native Iowan who moved back to the area from California two years ago. She enjoys reading books on gardening as well as other nonfiction. She chose to review this book, because she wanted to familiarize herself with Max Lucado’s writing after reading about his work. We thank her for her review.
