GATES COMPUTERS
Thanks to a generous donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,
the Mason City Public Library has four computers available for
word processing, homework, and research purposes. There are
a variety of Microsoft programs available on these computers, including
PowerPoint, Publisher, Encarta Encyclopedia, Magic School Bus,
and more. We require users to present a valid MCPL library
card or driver’s license to use these computers.
INTERNET ACCESS
Internet access is available to the public at the main desk. You
must have a library card and sign a waiver form to use the computers.
Parents must sign the waiver form for children under the age of 18. There
are ten stations available. While there is no fee for using the computers,
printing charges are: twenty cents a page for black and white copies,
$1.00 for color copies.
Visitors to the library can also sign up to use the word processors
or the internet computers. We ask that visitors present a photo
ID such as a driver’s license or a passport. All visitors
are subject to the same rules and restrictions as other users.
WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS
We ask that all patrons who are interested in using our wireless access
stop at the front desk first and read our usage policy. Wireless is free
to all, but usage on library property requires recognition of the public
nature of the location and acknowledgement of a need to respect the rights
of other library patrons. Please note that we are not responsible for
any loss or damage to your computers when used on our property. You alone
are responsible for what you download and for guarding your equipment
from theft or vandalism.
MCPL Internet guidelines
All persons requesting internet access at the Mason City Public
Library must read the guidelines and sign a waiver before first use. By
signing the waiver, the patron agrees that internet or library privileges
may be suspended or revoked if guidelines are violated. Patrons are required
to have a valid library card to use the computers. Using someone else’s
card to access the internet is a violation of MCPL policy. Visitors must
provide current, valid identification and sign a visitor’s waiver.
A parent or legal guardian is required to sign a consent form
and to be present with a child under the age of 10. Children between
the ages of 10 and 18 are required to have a parent or legal guardian
sign a consent form at the circulation desk before they may use the internet
for the first time. It is assumed that only one person will be assigned
to a workstation, except in the case of children under the age of 10.
Some internet users view adult material. While library staff cannot
control, and will not be responsible or liable for materials some may
find offensive, controversial, indecent, or inappropriate, we will attempt
to address any complaints brought to our attention. The MCPL reserves
the right to restrict use of the internet computers or facilities at
any time for any reason.
Internet usage is provided on a first come, first serve basis.
Each patron is allowed a minimum of one hour per day. Time will be rationed
when necessary. You may be asked to relinquish your workstation if: 1)
you have been using a computer for at least one hour or have accumulated
an hour’s use in one day, 2) someone is waiting to use a computer,
or 3) you have been using a computer longer than anyone else.
Users of internet access computers are responsible for any equipment
damaged through improper use. The use of CDs, notebook computers,
or plug-in handheld devices is prohibited at the internet stations. The
name of anyone involved in, or suspected of, proliferating a virus will
be turned over to legal authorities. Internet computers are for public
use only. Patrons may not use for business, commercial, or for-profit
purposes.
Library staff is available to assist with general questions regarding
internet log-on procedures. However, staff cannot provide technical
support or personal training for computer or internet use. If a problem
arises, do not turn off computer, but report the problem to library staff.
