Summer Library Challenge 2024 • Read, Renew, Repeat!

Stop in on or after May 28th to pick up Summer Library Challenge logs for all ages. Participants will track their reading and activity progress to earn tickets that can be entered into grand prize drawings for gift cards, coding robots, activity bundles, toys, games, and more! Everyone under 18 that completes the challenge will receive a book, a Godfather's Pizza, a Blank Park Zoo pass, and their name on the MCPL Wall of Completion. All completed logs must be turned in to the MCPL by July 5th in order to be included in the grand prize drawings.

Nature Day @ the MCPL, June 3 @ 2-6pm: 

Drop by the MCPL for some fun nature activities. We will be making bird feeders, bubble wands, decorating our own binoculars, and more! This event will be held outdoors and in the Children's Room and is for ages 11 and under. It will take about 30-45 minutes to complete all activities. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

 

SOAR Raptor Rescue, June 10 @ 4pm & 5:15pm: 

Saving Our Avian Resources (SOAR) is an Iowa-based nonprofit that provides raptor rehabilitation, education, and research. Come learn about two SOAR education ambassadors and their role in the environment. These beautiful and breathtaking raptors will hold your attention! This event is appropriate for ages 6 - Adult and will be held in the Mason City Room. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Space is limited, first come, first serve.

 

Happenin' Herps with special guest Heather Hucka from Lime Creek, June 19 @ 3:30-6pm: 

HERP? What is that?! Come and discover this amazing group of animals and just what they have in common while meeting some real live Herps! Drop in to learn about herps and make a couple of cool crafts. This event will be held in the Mason City Room and is for ages 11 and under. This event takes about 30-45 minutes to complete all activities. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

 

Under the Sea Day @ the MCPL, June 24 @ 2-6pm: 

Drop by the MCPL for some fun ocean activities. We will be making seashell creatures, ocean scratch art, pool noodle fish, and more! This event is appropriate for ages 11 and under and will be held in the MCPL Foundation Room and the MCPL Children's Room. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

 

Sunshine Storytimes: 

Join us on the MCPL lawn for outdoor storytime. We will share stories, songs, fingerplays, movement, and BUBBLES! Make sure to bring a blanket to sit on, sunscreen, and bug spray. These events are appropriate for ages 5 and under. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Sunshine Storytime will be held at 10am on June 5, June 12, June 26, and July 3.

 

Scavenger Hunt Week, July 1-5, all day (Closed July 4th): 

Drop by the MCPL Youth Services Desk to participate in a fun summer scavenger hunt. Find them items and win a prize! This event is for ages 18 and under. All children under 11 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

DIY Terrariums, June 4 @ 3-4:30pm

Spin Shelf Makeover, June 25 @ 2-4

Calling all creative minds! Come and help decorate out spin shelf to put in the Young Adult area! This will be messy, so please wear appropriate clothing. All materials and snacks provided. This event is for ages 12-18 and will be held in the MCPL Foundation Room.

A Day of Renewal, June 15 @ 10-4:

In the spirit of the "renew" of Read, Renew, Repeat, the Mason City Public Library is hosting “A Day of Renewal” for Adults on Saturday the 15th of June. Meditation, journaling, yoga, choral reading, journal decorating, and folding paper lotus flowers with a closing meditation will be the order of the day. Participants are asked to bring their own sack lunch and beverage. Snacks will be provided. Please dress in layers, and bring a yoga mat, rug or towel for the yoga portion of the day. Thanks to funding provided by The Friends of the Library and other anonymous donors there will be no cost for registration or the materials used during the event. Door prizes include a meditation cushion and books! Enjoy a day away from your usual routine to delight in “A Day of Renewal”. Registration is required and space is limited.  Talkin’ Trash and Dishin’ Dirt, June 20 @ 5:30-6:30:

Let’s talk about trash! How much is there, what happens to it, and what we can do about it. Come with questions and leave feeling empowered to be apart of the solution when it comes to getting control of our garbage. Hosted by Heather from Lime Creek Nature Center in the Mason City Room.

 

The Overstory Book Chats, June 26 @ 12-1 or @ 5:15-6:15:

Come take part in discussing the book The Overstory by Richard Powers in one of two discussion groups, lunchtime or dinnertime! Feel free to bring your own meal and covered drink to eat while you chat! Sign up, check out a copy of the book, and choose which group works best for you at the main desk.
